Conservation

I am currently formally involved in the following conservation organizations and initiatives:

Alliance for a Sustainable Amazon

In 2017, I served as the first Academic Programs Coordinator for the Alliance for a Sustainable Amazon (ASA) in Puerto Maldonado, Peru. While there I helped kick-start our internship and volunteer programs and monitoring projects in phenology and biodiversity. I now serve on ASA’s Scientific Advisory Board, helping to steward our monitoring efforts and translate our research into meaningful conservation science and inspiration for action to save the Amazon.

Pines and Prairies Land Trust

In 2020 I joined the board of the Pines and Prairies Land Trust (PPLT), a non-profit conservation organization based in Bastrop, TX. PPLT owns and manages three preserves that protect over 1,000 acres of the unique forests and grasslands of Central Texas. We also defend several thousand aces of conservation easements, which allow private landowners to protect family and working lands from future development. Through these efforts we help maintain air and water quality, protect biodiversity and endangered species, and provide recreational and educational opportunities to the people of Texas.

Texas Tropical Network

With support from the University of Texas Green Fund, I am building a network of researchers, leaders, and concerned citizens to better learn about–and from–the Tropics, in the hope of advancing conservation, ecological resiliency, and sustainable development. Through a series of public lectures, seminars, and events, the Texas Tropical Network (TTN) will bring together academics, policymakers, and activists who work in the tropics. By forging integration between fields, drawing connections between Texas and the tropics, and highlighting innovative initiatives, the TTN will enrich the intellectual life of its participants and help sow solutions to some of our most pressing problems.
